Nedap is proudly announcing the launch of SmartSight – Locomotion Monitoring: an AI-driven innovation that uses computer vision to detect lameness in dairy cows at an early stage. This marks the first milestone in our ongoing development of vision-based solutions to ignite the transformative potential of this technology in dairy farming. It seamlessly complements our trusted cow monitoring platform, amplifying its value for farmers and partners worldwide. This first SmartSight solution launches in the coming months, starting in the United States and Ireland.

Technology for the visionary, built to see beyond

Early detection of lameness to improve herd health and productivity
Nedap SmartSight – Locomotion Monitoring detects lameness, one of the most costly and challenging issues in dairy farming, at an early stage. It monitors the locomotion of each cow using Nedap’s SmartSight camera and provides actionable insights into the ones that need intervention due to lameness and associated hoof health issues. Enabling farmers to streamline their operations and take proactive action to improve herd health, well-being and productivity.

“Vision technology is a logical addition to our platform. It offers farmers new, complementary insights, starting with Locomotion, and gives us a completely new way to monitor cows. This is just the beginning. Step by step, we’re expanding our platform with purpose, always focused on optimizing the performance and well-being of individual cows.”
-Maarten Idink, Managing Director Livestock at Nedap

Years of development backed by rich data and proven accuracy
This launch follows several years of intensive development and rigorous testing on commercial dairy farms across multiple countries. These real-world environments generated millions of data points that have been used to train the system’s algorithms to truly understand cow locomotion and achieve exceptional accuracy.

Complementary to Nedap’s trusted platform
Vision technology adds a powerful new dimension to our cow monitoring platform, which already offers trusted solutions for identifying cows, monitoring their behavior and production, and locating or sorting those that need attention. They work seamlessly together and can be applied stand-alone. The addition and subsequent integration of vision with SmartSight elevates the platform’s capabilities, providing farmers with a comprehensive view of each cow, enabling them to farm smarter, more sustainably, and more profitably.

Launch marks first step in a broader vision strategy
Locomotion Monitoring represents the first step in an ongoing innovation strategy. As a leader in Digital Twin Technology, we are actively developing a suite of vision-based solutions to tackle key challenges in dairy farming. The phased launch of SmartSight – Locomotion Monitoring will start in the United States and Ireland in the coming months.
