From Family Tradition to High-Tech Farming

In the heart of the Dutch countryside, Han Wijnbergen and his partner Henrike are at the forefront of a thriving dairy operation that has seen remarkable growth and modernization over the years. The farm, a legacy passed down from Han’s father and grandfather, began with a herd of forty-five cows. Through dedication it has expanded now to a dairy farm with 190 cows and 120 young stock, with an impressive annual production of 2 million kilograms of milk. “Our aim is to maximize production within the existing structures,” Han states, reflecting on the journey that has brought them to this point.

Addressing Labor Challenges Through Innovation

As the farm expanded, Han encountered challenges, particularly in managing the increased workload. “We’ve grown significantly, and with that came moments when labor became a bottleneck,” Han recalls. It was this need for efficiency that led him to explore technological solutions, specifically in the realm of activity monitoring. Although initially hesitant about embracing high-tech solutions, a visit to a seminar hosted by Alta and an endorsement from a trusted colleague, convinced Han to take a leap and invest in Alta Cow Watch, powered by Nedap.

Contrary to his reservations about technology, Han found the system to be user-friendly and straightforward. “I’m not naturally inclined towards tech gadgets, but Cow Watch was a game-changer. It’s easy to read and operate; I understood it immediately,” Han shares. His daily routine now begins with herding the cows, a task that has been significantly streamlined by the insights provided by Cow Watch. “In the past, I had to rely on my observations. Now, I start my day with a clear plan for inseminations and treatments. It’s made a world of difference.”

Enhanced Reproductive Management and Health Monitoring

The advantages of Cow Watch extend beyond ease of use. Han has seen great improvements in reproductive management and the overall health of his herd. “There were times I thought two cows were in heat, and Cow Watch would reveal a third. It’s that precise,” he explains. The health monitoring feature, in particular, has provided unexpected benefits, offering peace of mind and allowing for early intervention in health issues. Han recalls an instance where Cow Watch flagged a cow for low feed intake, which led to the timely diagnosis and treatment of a displaced abomasum. “Cow Watch detected the problem before it was visibly apparent. In hindsight, I should have acted sooner.”

Leveraging Data for Superior Results

Integrating Nedap cow monitoring with their existing farm management program, Han has achieved remarkable reproductive success, improving their pregnancy rate from 24 to 28. “This integration ensures the monitoring system is always updated with the latest data, allowing for informed decision-making,” Han notes. The comprehensive visibility Alta Cow Watch provides across the entire operation, from heifers to dry cows, has been invaluable. “Despite having different buildings and some distance between them, we’ve managed to include everything with a single reader. It’s like having an extra set of eyes, watching over the farm 24/7.”

The Joy of Dairy Farming

For Han and Henrike, the true reward comes from seeing their animals thrive. “The entire cycle, from calving to raising healthy calves and seeing them join the herd, is what we work for. When the animals are healthy and performing well, that’s what brings me happiness,” Han concludes with a sense of fulfillment. The integration of Alta Cow Watch, into their farm management has not only enhanced operational efficiency but has also reinforced their passion for dairy farming, proving that tradition and technology can indeed go hand in hand for a better future.
